The Three Parts of the Ear
Your hearing is powered by one of the most fascinating systems in the body: the ear.
Each part works together to collect, process, and deliver sound to your brain.
The Outer Ear
Captures sound waves and funnels them down the ear canal. At the end of the canal sits the tympanic membrane (your eardrum), which separates the outer ear from the middle ear.
The Middle Ear
When sound waves reach the eardrum, it vibrates against the ossicular chain, three of the smallest bones in your body. These bones amplify the sound and send it to the inner ear.
The Inner Ear
Home to the cochlea and auditory nerve. Vibrations move fluid inside the cochlea, which stimulates tiny hair cells. These cells convert sound into signals sent through the auditory nerve directly to your brain.
